Tallahassee Historical Society
October 8 Meeting

Join us for our first meeting of the 2026-2027 Speakers Season on October 8 as we are joined by Evan Osceola and Edward Ornstein, who will be discussing the last decade of the Spanish period and the first decade of American territorial occupation in Florida.
The presentation will focus on the decade immediately preceding the founding of Tallahassee and the first decade of territorial history, with a focus on the Native, Black, British, and Spanish communities present before Jackson's invasions, how those communities reacted to the founding of Tallahassee in 1824, and how those communities' relationships with the new city and state government in the early territorial period - between its founding fathers like the Duval, Chaires, Murat, Brown, Call, Bellamy, and Gadsden and Miccosukee and Seminole leaders like King Hachy, Neamathla, John Hicks, and Alligator - led directly into the Second Seminole War which swept from South Georgia to the Florida Keys.
Evan Osceola is an enrolled member of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, and was born to the Bird Clan. Mr. Osceola serves as an Archives Technician in the Miccosukee Archives, Libraries, and Museums Department. Mr. Osceola is passionate about Miccosukee and Seminole history, and speaks six languages.
Edward R. Ornstein serves as Deputy General Counsel and Embassy Director for the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. Mr. Ornstein also serves on the Miccosukee Tribal Historic Preservation Advisory Board, and is a board member of the Tallahassee Historical Society. He is an enrolled member of the Southeastern Mvskoke Nation.
