Join us for our monthly meeting on March 13 as we are joined by Austin Bell, Chief Curator of the Museum of Florida History, who will be discussing the famous Key Marco Cat!

The Key Marco Cat is a famous archeological artifact, a sculpture, so to speak, that looks like a cross between Felix the Cat and the Pink Panther cartoon.  It was discovered on Marco Island in 1896 by the Smithsonian Institute’s Frank Hamilton Cushing.  The best estimate on the age of the cat is 500 years, which would make it about the time the Spanish hit Florida, literally and figuratively.

The Marco Cat was immediately popular.  He sent one of those messages that all cats send.  If you own cats—particularly the authentic kind—you know what I mean, and you know the message:  “Where the Hell have you been?  Where’s my food?”  The Marco Cat became a rock star, traveling around the country, reposing in various museums, all the time with that smirk on his face that said “see, I told you I was in charge.”

Reception at 5:30; Program at 6:00.

If you are interested in being one of our food sponsors at a future meeting, contact Rebecca Cruz at rebeccacruz1515@gmail.com.
